The trail then crosses a causeway to Rabbit Island/Moturoa, a popular recreation area with picnic spots, fragrant pine forest and sandy beaches. Although the trail is well signposted and never far from main roads and settlements, carrying a map will enhance the experience by pinpointing landmarks and assist with timings for shuttle pick-ups, etc. The Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust is pleased to announce that a 1.5km extension to Tasman's Great Taste Trail will be open to the public on Saturday 7th December. The following rides have been selected to make the most of Nelson’s cycle way network. But no matter how you slice and dice it, be sure to allow plenty of time to stop and enjoy the sights. From here, the trail crosses SH6 and follows a 1.4km stretch beside the highway to reach Wai-iti Domain, and then continues on a dedicated cycle path to reach Belgrove. These two trails will appeal to a wide cross section of cyclists and day trippers. The Mapua ferry is a neat way to finish the trip, as is a meal, beer or a spot of shopping in the waterside village. Natural beauty, however, is only part of the appeal, with this trail serving up a tantalising array of tasty attractions – from art galleries and boutique shopping, to fruit stalls, cafes, craft beer pubs and winery restaurants. Most folks will find it a comfortable granny-gear climb to a highpoint where there are panoramic views across to the western ranges and big blue of Tasman Bay. Directional signage indicating the Involution Loop is placed at key intersections along the way, with the first turn off the Barnicoat Road to your left just past the hang glider launch site. Before you head out, make sure your bike is safe, your helmet fits well and you have sun protection. From this intersection, a gentle traverse takes you to the Barnicoat Walkway, where you turn right and head up a steeper pinch, over the stile and onto the Jenkins Hill 4WD track. Mapua is a particularly appealing stop along the Great Taste Trail. An impressive suspension bridge takes you to the other side. It’s waterside location, accommodation, cafes, brewery and shops are good reasons to consider a lengthy linger or overnight stop. A left turn over a bridge leads to a right turn on to West Bank Road, and down the valley you go. Enjoy magnificent coastal and rural scenery, savour gourmet foods wines and beers right where they are produced, linger in craft studios or historic villages, or stop for a swim at a beautiful beach. Small destinations can be reached via the region’s public bus network, and smaller shuttle operators offering customised trips. The road is relatively narrow but has light traffic volumes. The waterfront cafe is a good spot to take it all in. Stay well away from all forest operations. Vertical Ventures. A. The network features mostly moderately-rated trails, like Una Canuma or Frog Jam, but still has technical trails with rock slabs and rollers too.Take the Svoboda Road up the hill and then pick a trail to descend. A permit is needed to ride in Hira Forest (Rides 13 and 14). Many of these urban rides link up and can be combined for longer rides or used as commuter connections. It’s a pleasant cruise across the island to reach the ferry landing from where it’s just a 200m boat hop to Mapua wharf. The trail continues through fruity country to meet a lovely stretch of coastal pathway, at first winding over bridges and boardwalk. A warm layer is also needed as it gets quite cold, particularly in the middle and obviously more so in winter. There are gaps in reception on some of the inland sections south of Wakefield and Motueka. On-trail signage ensures wayfinding is clear, while the trail website (and Facebook page) detail the latest updates. Nelson and Motueka are excellent bases for this ride and other adventures across the region, but there are many other options in smaller settlements and the surrounding countryside. Kitesurf Nelson. Eager riders can continue on to Wakefield through what is a particularly pretty section of trail; return shuttles are available to get you home again. Suffice to say, it’s pretty dark in there, so you’ll need to carry a torch if you want to survey the interior and avoid getting spooked, although we think a spot of spookiness is all part of its charm. The Nelson Tasman region is the Heart of Biking in New Zealand. The ferry runs on a limited timetable, particularly over the winter months; note that any cancellations (largely due to high winds and/or rough sea) will be advised on their Facebook page. The track climbs steadily through a series of switchbacks, then heads to the right across some long traverses, crossing two beautiful small creeks. Numerous access points and convenient bike hire make it easy to get a taste of the trail – as one-way rides with shuttle pick-ups, or return rides and loops factoring in alternative routes. Nelson cycle trail and rail trail accommodation is ideal for those wanting to discover some of New Zealand's less visited areas, often rich in pioneering history. Here we describe the trail effectively in its two ‘branches’ – the coastal section (more or less) from Nelson to Kaiteriteri; and from Wakefield through to Riwaka via the inland foothills and Motueka Valley. It is close to iconic attractions such as the Abel Tasman National Park. Going up: Reasonably fit riders will enjoy this challenge! Nelson is also less than two hours’ drive from the ferry port of Picton via the extremely scenic Queen Charlotte Drive, but it’s fair to say that the whole top of the South Island makes for a brilliant road trip. Horses are not permitted on the sections of trail specifically constructed for cycling/walking use. From each of these places there are signs and off-road trail to Spooners Tunnel (and back again) for a safe ride or walk.
